Territory Parks Alive!
With the visitor season in full swing, Wednesday 1 May marked the start of Territory Parks Alive 2024!
These free guided activities include walks and talks by our experienced parks and wildlife rangers and are available in most parks and reserves from the Top End to the Red Centre.
Our rangers love sharing their knowledge about the areas they manage and each event is your chance to have an invaluable experience on park to learn about park safety and the natural, cultural and historical values of NT parks and reserves.
In Central Australia and the Barkly Region PDF (3.3 MB) you can take the many stairs and join a ranger on the Outstanding Ormiston guided walk to the Ghost Gum Lookout for a spectacular view over Ormiston Gorge. Or join a ranger to learn about Foods of the Desert, a talk at the Trephina Gorge Information Shelter that will teach you about traditional bush foods and medicine plant of Central Australia and how Aboriginal people survived and thrived in this arid environment.
If you are in the Barkly Region, then join rangers around the campfire for this special look inside the day in the life of a ranger. Learn about the diverse role of a ranger in the remote Barkly Region, from rescuing wildlife to conserving biodiversity. Find out what there is to see and do in the area and discover that there is more to the marbles than rocks!
If you are heading north up to the Top End then check out the activities available in the Top End Territory Parks Alive Guided Activities PDF (2.5 MB) with a Guided nocturnal walk at the Howard Springs Nature Park. You will go spotlighting with a ranger in the park to discover the interesting wildlife that call the park home when the sun goes down.
Sundays at Berry Springs is also a treat where you can learn all about how to Be Crocwise and talk with a ranger about how we manage crocodiles in the park and right across the Top End. It’s also a great time to take a swim at the springs or go onto the Territory Wildlife Park.
No matter your interest, we’re sure there is an activity in your area that will appeal. It is a great way to talk directly with our experienced rangers and learn a little bit more about the Territory environment.
All our rangers are committed to protecting, conserving and presenting our parks and reserves in the best possible way. The Territory Parks Alive program has been established and running for a number of years and is a commitment in the NT Parks Masterplan 2023-53 which highlights “in everything we do, we will be: protecting nature and culture and presenting inspirational, educational, and recreational opportunities to grow public appreciation and enhanced connection with our parks and reserves”. Visitors can enjoy slideshows, guided walks, campfire talks and more.
