Blitzing through Casuarina Coastal Reserve: BioBlitz 2025
Over a weekend in March, friends of Casuarina Coastal Reserve Inc. (FCCR) hosted a BioBlitz event, bringing together over 200 participants to explore and document the biodiversity of Casuarina Coastal Reserve.
With the help of experts, scientists and volunteers, participants explored different habitats within the reserve, identifying and documenting over 126 species of plants and animals. Bats, snakes, skinks, frogs and 66 bird species were recorded, plus 2 new weed plant records.
The BioBlitz involved the local community, with many families and children participating. It offered a hands-on way for people to engage with conservation, foster a greater connection to the natural environment and build a greater sense of stewardship for our parks and reserves. FCCR was supported by a grant from the NT’s Community Benefit Fund.
Thanks to the many scientists, ecologists, and volunteers from Charles Darwin University, the Museum and Art Gallery of the NT, Flora and Fauna Division of NT Government (Department of Lands Planning and Environment), the Herbarium and retired specialists, who donated their time and expertise, leading surveys across various habitats and species groups. Thanks also to the many community volunteers who helped organise the BioBlitz and ensure the event ran smoothly.
Stay tuned for future BioBlitz events and thank you to everyone who helped make this one a success!
