NT Parks and Wildlife volunteer campground hosts, friendly welcoming faces in the heart of the Territory

Published

On behalf of all our wonderful NT Parks and Wildlife volunteer campground hosts we would like to say a big welcome to the 2025 hosting season!

NT Parks and Wildlife volunteer campground hosts play an important role in parks and reserves across the Northern Territory. As the welcoming face to 9 campgrounds in 7 different parks and reserves our hosts are ideally placed tourism ambassadors, helping visitors feel at ease in beautiful landscapes that are often ‘so different to home’.

Volunteer campground hosts are often the first point of contact for park visitors. Enthusiastic travellers themselves, they are usually familiar with the area and always ready to share their knowledge, making sure that the holiday experience is as enjoyable as possible for all campers.

Many NT Parks and Wildlife volunteer campground hosts are recent retirees, “grey nomads” who have travelled long distances to get to a park. They are happy to use their three-week hosting placement to rest and relax while they explore and soak it all in. Recently however we have had conversations with not-so-grey nomads and NT locals who are keen to take part in the hosting experience, but who don’t have quite as much time to spare.

It can be hard to set aside three weeks when you are working full time, so this year we are doing things a little bit differently. In 2025 we are offering shorter volunteer placements with hosts able to pitch their tent for a week or two in Litchfield National Park or Karlu Karlu Conservation Reserve, or any other NT Parks managed campground where they might be travelling and we are excited to say that we now have our first Territorians in the campground host team!

If you are going past Litchfield, Judbarra, Keep River, Karlu Karlu, Finke River or Trephina Gorge stop in and say hi to the hosts. They are always up for a chat, keen to hear about all your adventures and may even be able to share tips about their favourite birdwatching spot, find you a comfy seat for a sunset picnic or direct you to the best place for a quick refreshing swim.

They may even be able to tell you more about how to start your own hosting journey!
