Darwin once again delivers an epic MXGP of Australia
Darwin came alive this weekend as the MXGP of Australia presented by Sitzler wrapped up with a thrilling finale to the FIM Motocross World Championship at Hidden Valley Motorsport Complex from 18–20 September MXGP Hidden Valley.
Infront Moto Racing President & CEO David Luongo praised the event, saying 'for the second year in a row, we are here in Darwin for the final round of the MXGP season, and it is always a great pleasure for us to be here … Darwin is one of the most appreciated tracks of the season, with a great paddock and fantastic fans.'
In MXGP, Jeffrey Herlings (KNMV) dominated both Darwin races to secure his sixth world title. France’s Romain Febvre (FFM) finished the season second overall, with Slovenia’s Tim Gajser (AMZS) claiming third.
Herlings said Darwin is unlike anywhere else on the calendar, 'What I like most about Darwin is that it’s not the same as other places … the weather is really nice with sunshine every day, and the people here are also incredibly friendly.'
In MX2, Spain’s Guillem Farres (RFME) sealed the world championship in Darwin, ahead of teammate Camden McLellan (KNMV) of South Africa, with Belgian rider Sacha Coenen (KTM) completing the podium.
The WMX championship returned to Australia with Spain’s Daniela Guillen (GASGAS) delivering a flawless weekend, winning both races to secure her debut world title. Dutch rider Lotte van Drunen (Yamaha) finished second, while New Zealand’s Courtney Duncan (Kawasaki) claimed third.
The State Challenge brought together 86 of Australia’s best young riders across the MX85 and MX3 classes.
In MX85, current FIM World Junior Champion Blake Bohannon (Yamaha, NSW) dominated all four races to take the title, followed by Liam Millard (GASGAS, NSW) and Sidney Stephenson (GASGAS, QLD).
In MX3, Ryder Matthews‑Taylor (Husqvarna, WA) delivered four straight wins, ahead of Jobe Dunne (Yamaha, VIC) and Hayden Downie (GASGAS, QLD). New South Wales claimed the overall State Challenge trophy, with Queensland second and South Australia third.
Motorcycling Australia CEO Peter Doyle said the event showcased the strength of Australian motocross, 'Fans turned out in force to see the world’s best riders alongside Australia’s emerging motocross talent … MXGP of Australia is a fantastic opportunity to showcase that passion on the world stage.'
Friday’s MXGP Rider Signing Session at the Darwin Waterfront drew huge crowds with live music and entertainment from Tom Curtain’s Katherine Outback Experience.
Across the weekend, fans enjoyed family‑friendly activities including the Million Dollar Fish activation, Wild Top End Encounters, the Superior Sandpit, Kakadu Air Helicopter Flights and the Protraxx Kids’ Zone.
Saturday’s MXGP After Race Show delivered an exclusive extended program, bringing fans even closer to the world’s best riders with live interviews and behind‑the‑scenes insights.
Delivered by Tourism and Events NT (TENT) in partnership with Infront Moto Racing (IMR) and Motorcycling Australia (MA), the event was broadcast to more than 100 countries. Nationally, the final races aired live on Channel 9’s Gem, with Stan Sport providing four hours of dedicated coverage.
Tourism and Events NT was also presented with an award by Infront Moto Racing, recognising exceptional collaboration across international freight and logistics, operations, marketing and media, sporting and regulatory requirements, commercial partnerships and protocol.
Luongo added that the Territory team had 'taken this event to another level … it was a fantastic finale to the championship once again, and we cannot wait to be back next year.'
Across 3 days, more than 23,000 attendees witnessed 2 world titles decided in Darwin, along with several debut race wins. The 2027 MXGP of Australia is confirmed for 17 to 19 September.
