Living your best life as a volunteer campground host

Published

If you’ve ever dreamed of trading the daily rush for a slower, more grounded connection to nature, volunteering as a campground host with NT Parks and Wildlife might just be the perfect adventure.

Our parks and reserves are some of the most exceptional landscapes in Australia. They can also be busy, especially during peak visitor seasons. But for our volunteer hosts, these same places offer something different, the chance to experience the NT at its most peaceful and intimate, all while giving back to the spaces we love.

What a campground host does

Across 9 campgrounds scattered throughout the Territory, volunteer hosts contribute around 4 hours a day, 6 days a week.

The rest of the time? It’s entirely your own to explore, relax and soak in the scenery.

Hosts play a vital role in:

  • welcoming visitors
  • sharing local knowledge
  • helping keep campground facilities tidy and well‑maintained
  • being a friendly presence for travellers from all over the world.

Many of our hosts are seasoned road‑trippers. Others are embarking on their very first big lap. No matter your journey, spending a week or 2 as a volunteer host offers a safe, peaceful home base and a rewarding way to connect with nature and community.

A Territory adventure at your doorstep

Imagine starting your morning photographing the striking architecture of Litchfield National Park’s magnetic termite mounds or ending your day wandering the glowing rock escarpments of Trephina Gorge Nature Park as the sun sinks behind the ranges.

As a campground host, you might:

  • fish the upper reaches of the Roper River after drifting lazily down Bitter Springs
  • take a refreshing dip in the pocket‑sized waterholes along Walker Creek
  • test your 4WD skills on the way to Palm Valley, Boggy Hole or Surprise Falls.

Whether you prefer quiet sunsets, rugged tracks, birdwatching, swimming, or simply sitting back with a cuppa in the great outdoors. There’s a hosting opportunity that fits your style.

Get ready to slow down and live wild

If taking a slow wander on the wild side sounds like your idea of a perfect getaway and you have your own caravan or camper trailer, we’d love to hear from you.
