Alcohol minimum floor price

The bill has passed to remove the minimum unit price on alcohol.

From 1 March 2025, takeaway alcohol will no longer have to cost at least $1.30 per standard drink.

Impact on alcohol prices

The minimum price law was introduced in 2018 to prevent the sale of high-alcohol takeaway drinks at very low prices.

Many alcohol products were already priced above this minimum, so this change may not affect their cost.

Like other goods and services, alcohol prices will now be set by businesses.

Ongoing alcohol harm reduction measures

The Banned Drinker Register and police auxiliary licensing inspectors (PALIs) at bottle shops will remain in place as harm reduction tools.
