Licensing NT newsletter: June 2022

Representatives from the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre (AUSTRAC) recently visited Darwin to conduct information sessions with licensees.

AUSTRAC is responsible for preventing, detecting and responding to criminal abuse of financial systems through organised crime syndicates. It is part of a worldwide network to ensure compliance.

The information sessions involved licensing inspectors from Licensing NT as well as licensees whose premises contain electronic gaming machines.

Darwin has been chosen to host the combined 2023 Australasian Liquor Licensing Authorities Forum (ALLAF) and Australiasian Casino and Gaming Regulators (ACGR) forum. The annual meetings bring together regulators from all Australian jurisdictions to discuss issues affecting the regulation of alcohol and gambling and to share information and knowledge.

The most recent meeting was held in Adelaide in May and involved an informative discussion across states and territories. The gathering highlighted the Territory is not alone in dealing with some issues.

Licensing NT has partnered with Hospitality NT once again to produce a free, Territory-focused online course specifically designed for international students to gain responsible service of alcohol (RSA) qualifications.

The non-accredited RSA course, is designed for international students not studying a hospitality industry-related course. It contains training for specific Territory measures including the Banned Drinker Register and the minimum unit price.

Licensees of grocery stores are reminded that as of 1 July 2022, declarations for the 25% cap on takeaway liquor must be verified by an accountant or bookkeeper.

Those declarations must be lodged within 28 days of 1 July 2022.

There are penalties for breaching the 25% liquor sales cap or providing misleading declarations could lead to disciplinary action or enforceable undertakings.

To ensure licensed liquor businesses are compliant with the Liquor Act 2019 , Licensing NT must be notified of any change in your business structure or personnel.

This includes a change in nominee, change in contact details or if there is a change in company structure. If you do not advise us, you could be in breach of your licence conditions and action may be taken.
